Appeals court judge compares ECOT founder to Russian oligarch

Franklin County Appeals Court Judge Gary Tyack sparred with ECOT’s attorney Thursday, comparing the founder of the state’s largest online charter school to a Russian oligarch.

Attorneys for the state and the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow dueled in oral arguments before a three-judge panel. The school is trying to overturn a trial-court decision and stop the state from using log-in durations to determine enrollment and funding levels.

The school wants to block an Ohio Department of Education determination that, based on log-in data, ECOT must refund $59 million to the state because it justified only 41 percent of its enrollment. State law requires that students get 920 hours of educational opportunities.

Union Reps Gather In Harrisburg against “right to work” bill

Right to work means that employees in a union shop who don’t want to be part of the union can’t be charged any fee to support the operation of the union.

Supporters say the measure allows worker freedom and economic growth.

Opponents, such as the President of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Rick Bloomingdale, say right-to-work doesn’t do what it claims to do.
