We Are Ohio condemns Reps. Becker & Riedel’s ‘Dirty Half Dozen’ anti-worker proposals

We Are Ohio, the non-partisan, citizen-driven, grassroots organization, today condemned a package of anti-worker proposals from Reps. John Becker (R-Union Township) and Craig Riedel (R-Defiance), known as the “Dirty Half Dozen.”

Following a press conference today in Columbus where Reps. Becker and Riedel said they anticipate the package of proposals to be on the ballot in Ohio in 2020, We Are Ohio Spokesperson Dennis Willard issued the following statement on behalf of the organization:

“Right to Work is wrong for Ohio, wrong for working families and wrong for all of us.

“In states where they’ve passed these anti-worker proposals, these are the facts: workers earn less and they are maimed and killed on the job at alarmingly higher rates because they have lost their rights to speak out.

“Reps. Riedel and Becker are carrying water for out-of-state interests like the Koch brothers and the American Legislative Exchange Council. There are no workers lining up behind these dangerous, divisive and disastrous ideas for Ohioans. Right to Work is wrong for Ohio. Don’t trust it.”

We Are Ohio formed in 2011 and led the effort to veto Senate Bill 5 by a 62-38 percent margin later that year. We Are Ohio is a citizen-driven, community-based, bipartisan coalition that advocates for working Ohioans.

Bipartisan opposition to RTWIW

Just like opposition to Senate Bill 5 was bipartisan, so is Ohio’s opposition to “Right to Work” and Rep. Becker’s extreme anti-worker proposals. Ohio lawmakers – from both sides of the aisle – know that Rep. Becker is carrying water for out-of-state billionaires, like the Koch brothers. His proposals don’t reflect the will of Ohioans. That’s why we applaud the bipartisan group of legislators who have pledged to stand up for workers. This includes Republican Rep. Jay Edwards whose letter of support is below:

‘Right to work’ in Ohio? GOP lawmaker wants voters to choose

“Ohio is doing well without right to work,” said State Rep. Brigid Kelly, who also works as communication director for United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 700. “We want to build a strong middle class in the state of Ohio, and this issue is not the way to do it.”

Senate Democrats aim for nationwide Right to Work repeal
