Majority lawmakers missed a deadline yesterday to vote on a new map for Ohio’s 15 Congressional districts for next year’s election.
Heck, they didn’t even try.
They never even produced a map for the public to review.
Total disrespect for the 12 million people in this state.
Thank you to everyone who called the offices of state Rep. Brian Stewart and state Sen. Theresa Gavarone and asked “Where’s The Map.”
What’s next?
The map making process, which is designed to be bipartisan for fair maps and fair elections, now moves to the Ohio Redistricting Commission so now Frank LaRose gets involved.
Right.
The Redistricting Commission has until Halloween, yes very scary, or one month, to draft, introduce, take public input and pass a new map.
The new map needs bipartisan support on the commission as well and should that not happen – and odds are it won’t – the map goes back to…
The same majority lawmakers that did nothing.
They will have one more month, until Nov. 30, but they can pass a map at that point without a single vote from lawmakers in the minority party.
All of this goes against the will of the people and the clear intent of a vote by Ohioans to amend our state Constitution to have lawmakers work together in a bipartisan fashion to draw fair maps for fair elections.
The stall game? It’s on purpose. Here’s the irony and it’s rich: majority lawmakers are drawing a new map because the current map is unconstitutional.
Do you think they are planning on making things better or worse for voters?
They need to do their job.
They need to show us a map at the beginning of October.
They need to honor their oath of office to the Ohio Constitution.
Call Stewart and Gavarone’s office by clicking here. The question is still valid: Where’s The Map?
Sincerely,
We Are Ohio
