Ross Correctional Institution Corrections Officer Andrew Lansing reported to work on Christmas Day.
He never came home.
CO Lansing, 62, was brutally murdered by an inmate.
He leaves behind a wife and two children and a large and loving family.
More details are emerging, but an autopsy revealed he was beaten to death and died of blunt force head injuries. He suffered contusions and lacerations around the face and mouth, and his brain hemorrhaged from the assault.
CO Lansing was represented by OCSEA AFSCME.
This was not an isolated incident, but a broader pattern of failed leadership at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC).
In April, an ODRC employee was killed at a firing range during a training exercise run by the department.
The department and Gov. Mike DeWine has been unable or unwilling to address chronic staffing shortages that force corrections officers and staff to work long hours.
OCSEA AFSCME has called on Gov. DeWine and state lawmakers to make leadership changes in the department, starting at the top.
You can help.

Every worker deserves to go home safety at the end of their shift of public service duty.
