They’re back, angry, resentful, full of vengeance and willing to do and say anything to hold onto their power.
The same people who lied last year about their reasons for trying to do away with one person one vote and majority rule in Ohio are now trying to put up more roadblocks for citizens to go directly to the ballot box when lawmakers ignore them.
We stood together and defeated a proposal in August, 2023 to raise the threshold to 60 percent for citizens in Ohio to change the Ohio Constitution.
This did not sit well with Secretary of State Frank LaRose, state Rep. Brian Stewart or Senate President Matt Huffman because they like to ignore the will of the people while imposing their will upon the people of Ohio.
These are not moderate men. These are extremists, who are anti-worker and anti-union.
They will do everything in their power to keep their power so an effort to create a citizens’ commission to draw fair legislative and congressional maps for fair elections in Ohio, known as Citizens Not Politicians, has them fighting for their ability to continue to rig the system in their favor.
Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine called the legislature into a rare special session to address one thing, but the real reason was to try to stop Citizens Not Politicians and continue the gerrymandering that has served them so well.
Under the guise of taking dark money contributions from foreigners out of our election process – this is already illegal – LaRose, Stewart and Huffman weaponized Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost to conduct witch hunts into any groups who dare to challenge the legislative status quo.
Remember, the 60 percent threshold was supposed to be about stopping out-of-state money from influencing our elections, and then we learned LaRose, Stewart and Huffman’s plan to do away with majority rule was bankrolled by an Illinois billionaire.
The hypocrisy has not abated. Their scheme will do nothing to stop dark money contributions because they and their colleagues benefit each election from dark money contributions.
Instead, they have created a bogeyman, contributions from foreigners, and they have given investigatory power to Yost.
Yost, you may recall, is the attorney general who wrongly said there was not a “whisper of evidence” to show a 10-year-old rape victim was forced to go to Indiana to get an abortion.
