As the chair of the Ohio Senate General Government Committee, it is Sen. Kristina Roegner’s duty to give Ohio voters the chance to voice their concerns about legislation passing through her committee.
Right now, she is pushing Senate Bill 153 through committee at breakneck speed, and not giving Ohioans the chance to voice their concerns about the anti-democracy bill.
Send an email to Senator Roegner and tell her to SLOW DOWN and give Ohioans a chance to speak. It’s our right, and it’s her duty.
Senate Bill 153 and its companion bill House Bill 253 are the latest attack on the rights of Ohioans and on our direct democracy.
They rewrite the rules surrounding our citizen-led ballot initiative process, specifically the treatment of volunteers who collect signatures.
First, these bills would force volunteers to sign a form agreeing to give up their 5th amendment rights. By signing this form, volunteers could be subpoenaed for something as simple as a typo. This echoes of McCarthyism.
It’s not about protecting democracy like they say, it’s a witch hunt and bullying and intimidation.
Volunteers are not committing fraud. They are participating in democracy and helping their communities.
Senate Bill 153 and its companion bill House Bill 253 would put in place rules that say that volunteers are ‘compensated’ and must be treated and identified as such. What compensation?
It’s overly vague so if you’ve ever collected signatures then you know that the most compensation you’re going to get is a slice of pizza, some pop and – if you’re lucky – a t-shirt. That’s the compensation. Pizza and pop.
Send Senator Roegner an email today and tell her to SLOW DOWN and give Ohioans a chance to speak up.
SB 153 is an attack on our democracy and our freedoms.
Together we will fight back.
In solidarity,
We Are Ohio
