In April, 2011, We Are Ohio was formed to fight back against Senate Bill 5, the unfair, unsafe law that would have stripped collective bargaining rights from public employees.
We collected a record 1,298,301 signatures to repeal Senate Bill 5 in November, 2011 by a 63-37 percent margin and we have continued to stay together to fight for the rights of workers in our state.
Since then,we fought back against right to work is wrong laws when states all around us were passing these harmful ideas that stripped workers of their voice, freedom and power on the job.
We stood strong for prevailing wage, project labor agreements and other pro-labor, pro-union laws.
During this time, polls indicate unions are growing in popularity because workers understand they need to come together because there is strength in numbers.
In just the past year, we stood strong together against an effort led by Secretary of State Frank LaRose to diminish our collective power by raising the threshold to amend our own Ohio Constitution to 60 percent instead of the 50-plus one simple majority that has been our right and our power for more than 100 years.
We sent LaRose and his fellow losers packing last August by soundly rejecting their idea and preserving the idea of one person, one vote in Ohio.
This November, we will have a chance to steer our state and our democracy in a better direction by passing an amendment to our Ohio Constitution to fix the anti-democratic, anti-voter scourge known as gerrymandering.
Gerrymandering means politicians draw the districts they represent. In other words, they pick their voters instead of we the voters choosing who represents us.
The November amendment, know as Citizens Not Politicians, will put the power of drawing fair maps for fair districts for fair elections in the hands of we the people instead of they the politicians.
And our state will be much the better for it.
